Stroke Rate
Definition
The rate of strokes adjusted by age and sex per 1000 aged 40+ measured by hospitalizations or death.
Why This Matters
A stroke can happen when blood flow to an individual’s brain becomes occluded or has stopped altogether; This occurrence can result in damaged brain cells and a number of deficits ranging in disability (Heart & Stroke Foundation, 2021).
Key Findings
From the Community Health Assessment (2019) included stroke rate for Manitobans decreasing from 2.69/1000 to 2.48/1000 in almost all regions except for Northern RHA, which was deemed non-significant (p 67). Reporting on stroke rates is important when analyzing health data as there are many negative implications related to cardiovascular diseases.
Measurement and Limitations
Even though age is the strongest known risk factor for stroke, stroke occurrences in younger individuals are rising at an even faster rate than older adults (Heart & Stroke Foundation, 2017). A small limitation is noted within the graphed statistic as it only followed individuals 40+, as well as only individuals who sought medical attention or died from the stroke.

3. Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
Ensuring healthy lives and promoting the well-being for all at all ages is essential to sustainable development. Significant strides have been made in increasing life expectancy and reducing some of the common killers associated with child and maternal mortality. Major progress has been made on increasing access to clean water and sanitation, reducing malaria, tuberculosis, polio and the spread of HIV/AIDS. However, many more efforts are needed to fully eradicate a wide range of diseases and address many different persistent and emerging health issues.
