Readiness to Learn

Definition

Readiness to Learn measures a child’s ability to meet the developmental expectations as a percentage on five categories prior to a child entering kindergarten.

Why This Matters

Healthy Child Manitoba mission is to help Manitoban children and youth by developing an array of resources and support to families. Healthy Child Manitoba is focused on providing “child-centered public policy.” One tool that Healthy Child Manitoba utilizes is The Early Development Instrument (EDI) which was made by Offord Centre for Child Studies in McMaster University. Readiness to Learn looks at five key components prior to children entering kindergarten.

This includes: physical health and well-being, social competence, emotional maturity, language and thinking skills, and finally, communication skills and general knowledge.

Thereafter, scores for each measure are then assessed as vulnerable, at-risk, or on-track  (Healthy Child Manitoba, 2021).

Measurement and Limitations

This table shows the percentage of children On Track in each domain. On Track is the percentage of children with scores above the 25th percentile of the Canadian baseline sample.

High percentages are preferable. The higher the percentage of children who are On Track, the
better. You can also compare your site to Manitoba. Ideally, you would like to see your percentages similar to the rest of Manitoba, or higher.

3. Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

Ensuring healthy lives and promoting the well-being for all at all ages is essential to sustainable development. Significant strides have been made in increasing life expectancy and reducing some of the common killers associated with child and maternal mortality. Major progress has been made on increasing access to clean water and sanitation, reducing malaria, tuberculosis, polio and the spread of HIV/AIDS. However, many more efforts are needed to fully eradicate a wide range of diseases and address many different persistent and emerging health issues.
