Largest Public Sector Employers
Definition
A public sector employer includes local, provincial or federal government, government service or agency, a crown corporation, or a government funded establishment such as a school including universities/colleges and hospitals (Statistics Canada, 2023).
Why This Matters
“Although the contribution of the public sector to the Canadian economy has decreased over the past 40 years, it remains a key economic player and represents a vector of economic stability and growth. The economic impact of the public sector, in terms of jobs and GDP, is higher than the average of Canadian industries. The public sector fosters development in regions which have less diversified economies, such as those which depend largely on natural resources” (Schepper, 2019).

Ensuring healthy lives and promoting the well-being for all at all ages is essential to sustainable development. Significant strides have been made in increasing life expectancy and reducing some of the common killers associated with child and maternal mortality. Major progress has been made on increasing access to clean water and sanitation, reducing malaria, tuberculosis, polio and the spread of HIV/AIDS. However, many more efforts are needed to fully eradicate a wide range of diseases and address many different persistent and emerging health issues.
